National Lottery Ethiopia 2017 Winning Numbers Today
The rule governing Ethiopia’s betting industry is about to be changed by the National Lottery Administration. This occurred a year after the government temporarily stopped granting betting firms new licenses.
The Administration was given the authority to regulate and license betting enterprises by its establishment proclamation, which was passed in 2007. Five years before, a directive was implemented with the same goal.
“The decision to open the sector to new entrants will be made shortly after it is finalized,” said Tewodros Neway, the Administration’s director of communications. “The new directive will guide the betting market.”
At the moment, 42 betting businesses are operating in Ethiopia. The latter part of the previous Ethiopian year saw the closure of betting firms as the coronavirus outbreak stopped almost all live sports. However, with the main sports leagues’ reinstatement, they started up again in August 2020.
Although the Administration is steadfast in its stance, several companies have shown interest in obtaining fresh betting licenses in the meantime. According to Tewodros, “many citizens have voiced their disappointment over sport betting activities, citing its adverse impacts on the youth.”
Following concerns from many stakeholders and the general public, the Administration formed a task group and, along with the Ethiopian Management Institute, carried out research to evaluate the effects of gambling.
The new rule would tighten regulations on betting organizations’ day-to-day operations and include information on where they should be launched. Additionally, it would mandate that betting firms present operational data regularly. The directive will be sent to the Ministry of Revenues for approval when it is finished.
