On January 16, 2022, Hijra Bank was founded after the much expected government permission of full-fledged interest-free banking in Ethiopia. Due to the lack of Sharia-compliant institutions in Ethiopia, a sizable portion of the Muslim population experienced financial exclusion for many years. The establishment of Hijra Bank was a response to this community’s enduring request. Hijra Bank has been inclusive from the beginning and has shown a strong commitment to its guiding principles of diversity, justice, and inclusion in all aspects of its business operations. With 9,000+ small farmers, pastoralists, unbanked communities, peasants, and small merchants from all across the nation as its base, Hijra has a stronger start than other financial institutions in Ethiopia, which were founded by a small group of elites from a particular region. The bank’s policies on hiring personnel, staffing levels, and branch growth all align with its inclusive and diverse philosophies.

After only a year in business, Hijra Bank has established a solid reputation for its steadfast adherence to Sharia law. Islamic banking principles govern all of the bank’s financial services and products. The seven members of the Sharia Advisory Committee, who are Sheiks, imams, and renowned religious experts, evaluate and approve them on a regular basis. Additionally, the bank’s Core Banking System is obtained from iMAL, the first and only Sharia-compliant software system to get AAOIFI certification.

Hijra Bank is one of the fastest-growing banks in the nation as it continues to spread via its 45 locations, fulfilling its aim to be “the premier partner in Ethical banking” and entering new markets. The bank has improved financial inclusion for over 185,000 consumers nationwide by using digital technology via Internet and mobile banking. Apart from its standard banking activities, Hijra Bank is spearheading the nation’s efforts to promote Islamic banking via media campaigns and community outreach.
